Jamaica to Toronto

Launching the Festival Weekend with a special night at The Yale (1300 Granville Street) on Thursday, July 12, Jamaica to Toronto and DJ sets by Sipreano (aka Kevin Howes) present an intimate and interactive performance by Jamaican legends of the reggae, deep soul and R & B scene. Get ready to dance and groove the night away in one of Vancouver’s best ‘live’ rooms.

Jamaica to Toronto is a collection of singers, songwriters and musicians from Jamaica and the West Indies schooled in reggae, ska and rocksteady, who in the mid 1960’s immigrated to Canada searching for better living situations than those they had left behind. Decades later, Matt Sullivan, owner of Seattle label Light in the Attic and DJ/Journalist Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano), went on a mission of crate digging and exhaustive research, to rediscover these musical legends and reunite them on stage.

The album Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk and Reggae 1967-1974, was released last year, followed by their first reunion sold out show at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre. The Vancouver Folk Music Festival is pleased to present them at this year’s festival, their first Western Canadian performance.

Tickets to Jamaica to Toronto are $20 plus service charges at the Festival website www.thefestival.bc.ca or $23 plus service charges at Zulu Records, Highlife Records and The Yale.
DubRising

You’ll hear some of the heaviest dub vibes ever when DubRising takes over The Plaza Nightclub (881 Granville Street) Wednesday, July 11 at 9 pm, bringing together three of the top-ranking dub operators on the planet: Adrian Sherwood’s OnU Sound System, Ryan Moore’s Twilight Circus Dub SoundSystem and west coast live crew Big Bass Theory for one great big night of space, bass and positive attitude. Be there when they take it to another level with the magic and mysterious live moments of beauty conjured by the performance artists of Nucleus and a live video mix by Chonka of nDimension Visuals.

DubRising is a part of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival’s 30th anniversary celebration and this dream of Dub takes the stage just as artists are arriving from the UK, Australia, and all over for the Festival weekend. Who knows who else may drop in to the mix that night?

Adrian Sherwood has created a universe of dub over the last 25 years – an original sound cutting hard-ass punk into some of the finest singers and players ever to move between the yards of Kingston and streets of Brixton. Into that mix came hip hop’s founding rhythm aces who created the crucial rhythms and riffs on the Sugar Hill records that broke it out of Brooklyn. When you mix together the three most powerful kinds of music on the planet - punk, dub and hip hop – with some of the most radical rhymers of the day speaking out, the result is a musical revolution that reverberated back and forth across Europe, Japan and North America and back to Jamaica. Twenty-five years later, he’s still a dub standard of excellence, fresher than the rest and all the places where dub has taken root.

Twilight Circus Dub SoundSystem is bassed – that’s right, bassed - in Amsterdam but the roots run back through time and space to Kingston, and to Vancouver. Twilight is the dubchild of Ryan Moore, a musical imagineer whose bass lines anchored bands like Animal Slaves way back. His dubplates reflect a love and respect for the originators in Studio One and the other labs where dub began. His musical vision continues to grow with each new release, and he’s earned global respect wherever there are listeners who love dub. In 1997, he created the first Jericho dub sessions at the Festival and 10 years later he’s back for another chapter.

Big Bass Theory is some of the heaviest local BC dub sounds you’ll experience. Based on Saltspring Island and led by Sean ‘SirBassa’ Hill, Big Bass Theory is rooted in solid riddims with serious bass frequencies. Full of soaring horns, steady bubble and skank, their music uplifts the soul with positive sound and vibrations with a defininte dancehall feel and reggae groove. Last year they were part of the biggest dub ever dropped in this town, shaking the foundations together with pioneering dub poets Lillian Allen and Clifton Joseph, Austria’s Dubblestandart, MC Jacob Cino and many other special guests. Everyone was shaking…and stirred.

Tickets for DubRising are $25 plus service charges online at www.thefestival.bc.ca and
$28 plus service charges at Zulu Records and Highlife Records.

IRIE BAND CD RELEASE for "BOOK OF DUBS"
www.lionheart.ca/irieband/irieband.html
Irie Band on Myspace www.myspace.com/iriebandtoronto
~

The Irie Band is a Toronto-based reggae outfit that delivers dub riddims in a classic, Jamaican late 70's and early 80's style. Formed in January 2006, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran, Steven Cogdell. For six months, the band played a weekly gig called "Irie Tuesdays" at Cervejaria Downtown, that honed them into a tight, heavy unit.

Irie Band has performed at The Marijuana March, Lula Lounge, Ciao Edie, Parkdale Arts and Crafts Festival, Come Together Music Festival in Durham, The Townehouse in Sudbury, Pedestrian Sundays in Kensington Market, Revival's World Cup Kick-Off Party, Ellington's Fez Baitk and Lee's Palace.

Steven Cogdell, a foundation member of Sunforce and Revelation, is from Cocoa Beach, Florida. He has appeared on CityTV, MuchMusic, CBC and his original songs and the video "Lost Without Your Love" have been played in Canada, the USA, the Caribbean, Germany, Belgium, France, England and South Africa. Steven combines his steady rhythm guitar with bluesy solos to come forward with a high-energy roots reggae sound.

Collin "Jahlin" Edwards on drums was born in Hanover, Germany. In 1987, he began performing as the drummer with reggae band Imagine Rainbow Warriors, led by local activist Steve Hall. He returned to his family roots in Jamaica in 1992 and stayed until 2003. He has worked with such artists as Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman. Collin's dynamic drum work gives the Irie Band its raw, hard-hitting edge.

Uncledropsi, a veteran bassist of twelve years, is a crucial part of the heavy sound of the Irie Band. He started his musical career in 1997 with the Selassie I Power Band. They went on to win a Canadian Urban Music Award the next year. Dropsi's highly defined style keeps the crowd on their feet and moving to his powerful rhythm.

Dragoslav Tanaskovic on keys was born and raised in Yugoslavia (Serbia) where he graduated from the Music Conservatory in Belgrade. He has collaborated with many Canadian artists on many different projects. He played guitar and keys with Melanie Doane, accompanied John Millard and still plays with the Grammy winning Alannah Myles. Drag's multi-faceted musical background adds a unique element to the Irie Band's melody section.

Jay Cleary (aka The High Plains Drifter), on rhythm and lead guitar was born in Toronto. Jay started his performing career while at St. F.X. University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. With other students of the jazz program, he founded his own funk-fusion project, High Plains Drifter .They released their debut album in 2004, then relocated to Toronto in 2005 where they continue to perform. Over the years, Jay has played with Caution Jam, Duane Andrews, Mark Wilson & The Way It Is and Zion King. As the newest member of the Irie Band, Jay brings his enthusiasm and a unique jazz element to the project. visit: www.myspace.com/highplainsdrifting

The Irie Band's debut album, "The Book of Dubs" is a seven song CD of original instrumentals that was recorded live in Kensington Market. The vibe is truly IRIE! Check them out!

The legendary dj & producer Cheb I Sabbah returns to the West Coast...
San Fran based DJ Cheb has been spinning discs longer than most of us
have been alive.
He left his native Algeria in the 1960s, and has made a career out of
blending music from all over the world into kaleidoscopic, dance-floor
mixes ever since. His first three masterful albums for Six Degrees
Records, Shri Durga (1999), MahaMaya - Shri Durga ReMixed (2000), and
Krishna Lila (2002), are cult classics in which India's time-honored
traditions merge with the universe of possibilities afforded by
contemporary recording technology. Most recently, on La Kahena, Cheb
returns to his North African roots, collaborating with some of the most
distinctive female singers from the Maghreb.

Don't miss this rare opportunity!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INTERNATIONAL HITMAKER EVERTON BLENDER IS TOURING THE WEST JULY 2005.

One of Jamaica's classic roots/dancehall reggae artists, Everton
Blender, along with the Blend Dem Band from Jamaica is doing some
festivals and club dates in the western US and Canada.

Blender is touring to support a new release entitled My Time
(Explorer Records). Several of Blender's hits such as "Lift Up your
Head," "Ghetto People Song" and "Family Man" have risen to anthem
status, helping to give hope to people around the world, especially
the poor and needy. Blender is one of the few messengers who truly
lives the part he writes about. He lives the "family man". When
Everton Blender performs, one quickly recognizes that his works are
from the heart. His message is one of commitment to good principles
and good living amongst people. He is an uncompromising Rastaman,
consistently hitting the market with the cause of Rasta people.

Biography: Everton Blender

One of the few Jamaican singers to truly bridge the gap between the
roots and dancehall reggae styles is Everton "Blender." When reggae
fans hear the opening notes of "Lift Up Your Head," "Ghetto People
Song" or "Blend Dem," they instantly recognize these songs as major
cultural anthems of our time. The large number of hits Everton has
accrued is most impressive.

Although Everton had recorded a handful of singles for various
producers, he had yet to score with a hit on the Island. But that was
about to change. In 1991 he voiced the autobiographical "Create a
Sound." The song described Everton's experiences in the music business
and with the Rasta faith. It was released the following year on the
Star Trail label, and it was Everton Blender's first hit. He continued
to record for Star Trail, who had a distribution deal with Heartbeat
Records. 1994's "Lift Up Your Head" was Everton's full length debut,
and featured "Create a Sound," along with the hits, "Family Man,"
"Bring di Kutchie," "My Father's Home," "Gwaan Natty," and the title
track, which would go on to become one of the biggest anthems of the
1990's.
Everton continued to record for Star Trail and other labels, scoring
hits including "Blend Dem," "World Corruption," "Bob Marley," "Piece
of the Blender," "The Man," and "Coming Harder," all collected on the
1996 album,
At this time, Everton decided to take charge of his career and start
his own label, which he named Blend Dem Productions. He began to
finance most of his own recordings, a move that heightened tension
between him and many who wished to control the music production and
promotion on the Island.
But he persevered, knowing that being in control of his career was
the right decision, and his relationship with Heartbeat became even
stronger. In 1999, Heartbeat released Everton Blender's first album by
Blend Dem productions, Rootsman Credential. Alongside boom shots like
"Ghetto People Song," "Why Do We Have to War," and "False Words" were
Everton's own productions including "Slick Me Slick," "These Hands,"
and many more strong statements of Everton's faith and will to
succeed. Since the release of Rootsman Credential, Everton has toured
the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, establishing himself as
one of the top touring forces from Jamaica. Live at the White River
Reggae Bash captures Everton performing his most popular material with
the Blend Dem band.

As the millennium came to a close, Heartbeat released an album of new
Blend Dem productions that included top acts riding Everton Blender
produced rhythms. Dance Hall Liberation features Anthony B, Tony
Rebel, Louie Culture, Richie Spice, Everton Blender, daughter Isha,
and others. Everton was also executive producer on Richie Spice's
debut album.
In 2001, Blender released "Visionary", consisting of his trademark
conscious commitment over sizzling roots and dancehall
self-productions. With guest appearances by Bennie Man, Anthony B,
Tony Rebel, and Marcia Griffiths, along with Everton's own strong
performance, the album garnered favorable reviews throughout the music
press. 2001 and 2002 also marked excellent touring years for Blender,
in which he headlined several major reggae events.

"King Man" released in 2002, represents another installment in
Blender's legacy of excellent reggae music. In 2005 Blender did a
two-month North American tour with America's Reggae Angels and July
2005 marks the release of "My Time", his latest album on Explorer
Records. It's a strong album from beginning to end.
Don't miss him when he passes through Nelson at the Fluid Lounge

One Night Only in Nelson, Saturday July 16th!!!
